Google is experimenting with enhancing the YouTube viewing experience by introducing an AI assistant, aiming to address viewers’ questions and queries in real time. Initially, this feature is being tested with select YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States as part of a limited trial.
During the trial, eligible Android users will notice an “Ask” button beneath qualifying videos, allowing them to engage with the AI assistant by typing out questions or selecting from preset prompts, such as summaries or related content recommendations. Google’s AI then analyzes the video content alongside the query to provide relevant responses seamlessly, without disrupting the viewing process.
While not every video currently offers this AI assistant feature, Google is gradually rolling it out, with supported videos prominently displaying the “Ask” option below the player controls. Users are required to accept Google’s terms for generative AI before utilizing the feature for the first time.
Early tests of the AI assistant have shown promising results, with quick and accurate responses to user inquiries. However, this experimental feature is slated to be available only until May 1, indicating that Google is keen on assessing user interest and feedback before deciding on its permanence within the YouTube platform.
As AI continues to integrate into various Google products and services, the company emphasizes transparency regarding its use. YouTube creators are now required to disclose AI-generated content, and Google is introducing AI disclaimer labels for videos covering sensitive topics like politics or health, underscoring its commitment to responsible AI implementation.
